Come Home gets a makeover and goes national!

Come Home new album artwork

At the tender age of little over two years, our first offspring - a little CD entitled Come Home - will soon be making its way to music stores around South Africa.

After a long process of talking with a bunch of different music companies, we've prayerfully decided to go ahead and forge a relationship with the well-established Christian label Maranatha Music. They'll be licensing Come Home (2008) as well as the new album which (God's will be done) will be finalised towards the end of next month - October 2010.

Maranatha have applied their expertise to Come Home by redesigning the packaging for us, and we're really stoked with the result. We're sure the new shiny artwork (pictured) will make a better first impression on newcomers to the name Harbourlight.

Even though it's hitting the shelves, we'll still be selling Come Home at gigs, and still taking CD orders on our web site. And for internationals, the album is still available for download on the iTunes Music Store as well as a few other digital outlets.

A big thank you to Maranatha for welcoming us into the family, and as always, praises to God for the places He's taking us. This feels like an important step and the right time to take it!

We really are recording an album...

In the studio together again

My goodness, we haven't written a blog post since January.... :-/ We are so bad at this! But hopefully we can make up for our bad-ness in this department by doing well in other departments, especially that of making music.

So speaking of making music... I'm sure our seeming silence this year has led some of you to wonder if we really are making an album, or if in fact there is still a Harbourlight, or actually, if there ever was a Harbourlight for that matter. Well I can promise you that although we may have been quiet on the gigging side, or news reporting side, we certainly have not been silent. To the contrary have been very loud and very busy in the recording studio.

When we headed into studio we were very excited as we felt this album had a lot of potential. Six months later we are a whole lot more excited! We really want to produce the best album we can, and we're allowing ourselves all the time we need to do that. This approach has paid off. Songs have been re-written, new songs have been written, arrangements have been worked and re-worked, until it feels like everything is hitting the mark. This all takes a lot of time, energy and patience, but it's so worth it.

We're not gonna hint at any release dates yet, but in a month or so we should have a good idea as to when it will be ready.... What we can tell you is that we think it's sounding amazing.... :) We can't wait to get this album out there, let you guys hear what we've been up to, and to start playing live again!

It is You... and studio update

You can download the chords for our song "It is You" below in PDF format. It's track #13 (the last one) on our album Come Home and we do hope that it's used by worship teams in churches besides our own!

I'll take this chance just to give a quick update on the progress on the new album - we're still sooooper excited for how it seems to be turning out and the songs that are coming together for it. The concept for the album in our minds has matured and diverged a bit from what we originally saw for it a number of months ago, and a few unplanned-for tracks have crept in. Really cool ones though. Exciting ones. Hopefully it'll all make for a more interesting and appealing listening experience :D

So ya, we've been incessantly searching for some really nice electric guitar sounds in the studio, which has been time-consuming to say the least, but it seems like we're finally getting somewhere, and we're so sure that all the time invested is going to be worth it!

And yes, sorry for being so quiet lately - it's only 'cos we've been working so hard on the album :)

2010!

Well a happy new year to everyone! We had an amazing new years down at Arisefest – what an awesome way to go into 2010! Thanks to everyone who supported us there – it's one of the gigs we've enjoyed the most so far. And well done to the organisers of the event and the other bands who played there, it was brilliant.

We're all back from holiday now and trying to catch up with January. We're settling into studio and feeling even more excited about album 2. Last night we had our first practice for the year and things are getting rolling nicely.

I guess the biggest news we have at this point is that Craig got engaged after Christmas! Wow. So we want to say a huge congratulations to Craig and Aletta, we are excited for you guys and look forward to journeying and serving with you over the years to come. Whoop whoop :)

Otherwise we're playing at Rosebank Union Church this Sunday from 18:30. Please come join us if you can. Let's make the first gig of the year a big one....

Hope to see you soon

Shaun

December fun

Just want to say a belated merry Christmas to everyone! We hope you are all having an amazing festive season and getting lots of time out. December is just so much fun :)

We've taken a break from recording over the Christmas period, but we'll be back in studio around mid-January. Tomorrow we head down to Midmar dam (near Pietermaritzburg) for Arisefest. We play on the 31st and we're really looking forward to it. It's going to rock!

We hope to see some of our Harbourlight friends down there.... And we hope the whole festival goes really well and ultimately brings glory to God's Name.

If we don't see you at Arise we hope to see you next year.

Until then

Cheers :)

So it begins...

Around midnight last night...

Last night Chris and I did the first 'official' session for Album 2, recording guitar parts for one of our favourite songs on the album. It's exciting to be starting the album, but at the same time it's a little daunting when you look at how far there is to go. The December period is also probably not the best season to go into into studio as it is always the craziest time of year, but we are determined to make a bit of progress on the album before closing up for Christmas, playing Arisefest and taking a bit of a holiday. Then in the second week of January we'll get full swing into the recording process. Fun!

Hope you are all getting your Christmas shopping done, and doing lot's of exercise in between eating Christmas pies :)

We received this message today via the contact form on the site:

Hi

We have a 40meter harbor on the coast and we need some lights as we are unable to see at night when the boats come in, I usually use matches but they tend to go out quickly and on one night i use about 13 boxes of matches.

So if you can send me a quote it would be much appreciated. Please do not quote me on additional costs for the band, i will attach the light to poles, or maybe weld it on. What do you think?

Awaiting your reply

Bianco

Our response:

Hi Bianco

Thanks very much for your enquiry.

Unfortunately we're unable to process your request right now because we're out of stock of the lights with pole attachments for 40 meter harbours.

I would like to refer you to one of our competitors the Electric Light Orchestra. They have been around since the 70's so please don't be concerned about their level of expertise.

If they can't help, you might also contact AC/DC who are also qualified electrical and music specialists.

As a last resort, if you can't find anyone to install some harbourlights for you, get in touch with the White Stripes - they should be able to paint some markings on your harbour which will assist greatly with the visibility at night.

Kind regards
Chris Dawson

We've just played at Moreletapark

We've just finished a great week of gigs, ending with Moreletapark on Sunday night. Here's a video of “In Your eyes”:

It was exciting to be playing on the same stage that we just saw Third Day on two weeks ago. Obviously the people just came for the evening service and not for Harbourlight, but it was still a great opportunity for us to play in Pretoria, in the biggest venue we've ever played in by a long way, and make some new friends up there.

The whole sermon and service had been planned around “In Your eyes” which we found amazing. We played two songs up front and then sat down for the sermon, before going up again to play the song that I find probably the hardest to sing of our repetoire (In Your eyes). I was really nervous for it, because we had to get up and play it from cold without a chance to re-warm up my voice. I was dreading those first falsettos which, if you watch the video, nearly went wrong :) But by God's grace we got through the first chorus and the rest was really enjoyable for us. Thanks to everyone at Moreletapark for having us!

Now we look at heading into studio to start album 2. It's going to be so much fun, and we aim to keep you up to date on the process with some video blogs.

Keep posted :)

What a great week

At Tanz on Tuesday

We've had such a great week so far. On Saturday we travelled down to Pietermaritzburg for the Arise Launch – the pre-event for Arisefest over new years. It was the first gig we've played in a while and we really had a blast. The crowd were great in supporting us and joining in on the songs and it felt like a great set – so thanks Pietermaritzburg people! We met many great people there, and it was also fantastic meeting and catching up with some of the other bands there. All in all it was a fantastic evening and we're really looking forward to Arisefest.

Sunday we drove back up to Jo'burg, Monday was back to work for the guys and then Tuesday evening we played at Tanz Cafe.

We've played there once before at Finding Noah's EP launch, and Finding Noah invited us back to do another Tanz gig with them. We really enjoyed it. It's a pretty chilled and interactive kind of vibe, so the best is to just go up on stage, be yourself and have fun playing music. We loved it!

On Satuday we're playing at Northfield Methodist in Benoni with Tomfoolish and The Exploits, and then on Sunday we drive through to Moreletapark to play some songs at the evening service – our first gig ever in Pretoria.... :)

November here we come

We are really looking forward to the gigs we've got lined up for November. We can't wait to play again! In addition to the dates posted previously we have added Tuesday 17 November at Tanz Cafe in Jo'burg. We'll be playing with Finding Noah as well as others. If you're in the area do come along.

Otherwise I am currently in studio working on some of the demos of the new songs. We are so enjoying playing them at practices and we can't wait to air some of them at the upcoming gigs. We are looking to start the official recording process of our second album as soon as we're done with November's gigs. That will give us a few weeks in December to put down some tracks before Christmas and traveling down to Pietermaritzburg for Arisefest and a bit of a holiday. In mid-January we'll be in full swing in the studio again.

Fun times!
